Lieutenants David and Laura Hickman were ordained and commissioned as Officers with The Salvation Army in June 2013. Their appointment to The Salvation Army in Goderich is their first. As part of their responsibility here in Goderich they pastor our church and provide oversight to the operation of our Community and Family Services and the Thrift Store.
Lieutenant David Hickman was born and raised in Victoria, British Columbia, where he grew up attending The Salvation Army’s Victoria Citadel with his mom, dad and two brothers. Prior to responding to God’s call to become a Salvation Army Officer David spent many hours working alongside his aunt and uncle at Oak Bay Hardware. Although David considered taking over the hardware store he felt that God was calling him to use his talents in other ways.
Lieutenant Laura Hickman was born and raised in Brantford, Ontario, where she grew up attending a non-denominational church called Cornerstone Church with her mom, dad, sister and brother. Having grown up in the church Laura has always been involved in ministry in a variety of ways. It was during the summer of 2005 that Laura felt that God was calling her to devote her life’s work to His work; and it was after meeting David Hickman in 2008 that she started to consider Salvation Army Officership the avenue through which God would use her best.
The Lieutenants have two children, Lily and Malcolm, who bring such joy to everyone they meet. When the Lieutenants are not busy with the duties of Salvation Army Officership you are likely to find them feeding the birds along the trails of Huron County or near the water’s edge with fishing poles and a camera in hand. As they think about their time in Goderich their prayer is that God would use them to bring Him honour and glory; that their lives would be a reflection of Christ and that through them others would come to know the awesome love of God.
